Horatio Spafford wrote this text in 1873, after his four daughters died when the ship Ville du Havre sank in the Atlantic. Philip Bliss named his tune VILLE DU HAVRE for that ship, and the hymn appeared in Gospel Hymns No. 2 in 1876 in the meter 11.8.11.9 with refrain.
