Charles Wesley published the first form of this text in Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739, and George Whitefield altered its opening line in 1753. William Cummings fitted it in 1856 to a melody from Felix Mendelssohn's Festgesang of 1840, now called MENDELSSOHN, and the meter is 7.7.7.7 doubled with refrain.
